If I live in a Smoke Control Area, can I install a wood-burning stove?
Yes you can by installing what are known as ‘exempt appliances’ which means that they have undergone rigorous testing to ensure that they demonstrate particularly clean burning combustion.  In the UK suitable models have been granted exemption from the regulations by the government through DEFRA but this is due to be superseded by a new initiative called Ecodesign.

However, on Monday 28th February 2017, the Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) launched the new Ecodesign initiative in Parliament.  Ecodesign is the European-wide directive to lower emissions which will come into full force in the UK in 2022.  After 2022 any wood-burning stoves being installed in Smoke Control Areas must be an Ecodesign Ready stove.

These new stoves are being developed by the major manufacturers along with the SIA and government departments and are designed to efficiently heat our homes whilst significantly reducing the production of CO2 and other emissions and meeting the new stringent emission limits.  From 2020, the participating manufacturers will only be supplying these new Ecodesign Ready compliant stoves, two years ahead of schedule.
